Above-Ground Diesel Fuel Storage Tanks (ASTs)
Advantages Of Above Ground Fuel Stations:
- These tanks are easy to install and relocate
- They are simple to inspect, clean, and maintain
- These tanks offer a much lower initial cost than an underground tank
Setup Requirements of a Fuel Station:
- Base/Foundation
- Concrete pad or steel support
- Must be level and stable
- Bunding/Spill Containment
- Capacity: 110% of the largest tank or 25% of total (if multiple)
- Ventilation
- Emergency vent for pressure release
- Security
- Lockable caps and access control
- Fencing or bollards (for commercial/fuel station use)
- Signage
- “Diesel Fuel,” flammable warnings, hazard placards
Safety and Compliance of a Fuel Station:
- Fire distance clearance: Typically 3–6 meters from buildings or ignition sources (local codes vary)
- Grounding/Earthing: This prevents static discharge during refuelling
- Inspection frequency: Monthly checks, annual professional inspections
- Fire extinguishers: Foam or dry chemical, nearby and easily accessible
